Orion’s Choice Chicken and Rice Formula is the food we recommend for most dogs.   It is our own premium formula that includes only the finest ingredients.   You will see that chicken meal is listed first on the ingredient list.  Many dog foods have corn as the first ingredient.  Even so called “premium” dog foods often list chicken (often referred to as “real chicken” or “fresh chicken” in the marketing hype) as the first ingredient.  While having chicken listed as the first ingredient seems to indicate a quality product, an understanding of the label is in order.  Ingredients are listed by weight prior to cooking.  Chicken is mostly water and once the water is removed during the cooking process it may no longer be the primary ingredient in the food.  In fact, it may drop to fourth or fifth in terms of quantity.  Orion’s Choice uses chicken meal which, by definition, has had the water removed and remains the primary ingredient even after cooking. You will see various meals in our ingredient list because we don’t think you should pay for water.   This is far more expensive for us, but we believe dogs deserve to have the finest ingredients in their food.

Orion’s Choice Chicken and Rice Formula does not contain any wheat, barley, soy or corn.  Many dog food companies have been removing wheat from their dog food ingredient list since many dogs have difficulty digesting this grain.  However, they have been replacing wheat with barley which is in the same family as wheat (as is rye).  So dogs that cannot digest wheat often have difficulty digesting barley.  This often gives the poor dog gas and also results in more yard clean-up since much of the ingredient passes through the digestive system.  This is especially important for dogs that spend much of their day home alone while humans are off in the working world.  (For a further information on barley as an ingredient in dog food, please read the excellent book Feed Your Pet Right by Marion Nestle and Malden C. Nesheim available from the library and most book stores).  Orion’s Choice instead uses high quality rice and oatmeal as primary grains.

We also use high quality alfalfa meal in our Chicken and Rice Formula.  According to the National Research Council’s Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats alfalfa is an excellent source of calcium for dogs.  While we don’t recommend feeding raw alfalfa sprouts to dogs, when cooked in our dog food it provides excellent nutrition.  Other top quality ingredients are salmon meal, flaxseed meal, dried whole eggs (as opposed to “egg product” as seen in many ingredient lists), sweet potato flower, and pumpkin meal.
