Performance Formula $39 per 40 lb. bag
For hunting, herding and other very active dogs, we recommend Orion’s Choice Performance Formula. We invite you to compare Orion’s Choice Performance Formula to the leading brand. Our Performance Formula has chicken meal as the first ingredient. Chicken meal has been dehydrated prior to inclusion in the dog food and remains the number one ingredient after preparation. The leading competing performance brand has chicken as the main ingredient. Chicken is 60-70% water which is removed during the cooking and drying process. So why pay for water when you can provide meat as the number one ingredient for your dog? We think the choice is simple. Choose the dog food with more meat. Choose Orion’s Choice.
After chicken meal, the next ingredient in Orion’s Choice Performance Formula is corn which is a highly nutritious grain. There is a tremendous amount of incorrect information on the internet about corn. You will see comments such as cheap filler, not digestible, causes allergies, etc. None of this is true. According to the data published by the National Research Council (part of the National Academies of Science) in their 2006 book Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats , corn is one of the best grains for dogs and cooked finely ground corn (as it is in our dog food) is highly digestible. We do not use corn gluten meal, but finely ground corn kernels. A few dogs may have allergies from corn, but these cases are few and often it is some other allergen that is causing the problem. We have left it out of Orion’s Choice Chicken Formula and Orion’s Choice Pork Formula due only to the substantial bias against it. However, hunting and herding dogs seem to receive an extra boost of energy from corn which they need to perform.
Beet pulp is another maligned dog food ingredient on web sources. Again, the National Research Council disagrees and lists beet pulp as the best source of fiber for dogs. Web “experts” site that it has too much sugar and cause diabetes. Once again, not true as beet pulp has already had the sugar removed. Sources on the internet also state that beet pulp shouldn’t be in dog food because it is not digestible. True, dogs to not digest the majority of the beet pulp and that is the point of including it in dog food. It is intended as a source of fiber to provide substrate for beneficial bacteria in the intestine which then aids digestion. We did not include beet pulp in Orion’s Choice Chicken Formula and Orion’s Choice Pork Formula again only due to bias, but studies show it to be the best source of fiber to encourage beneficial bacteria in the canine intestinal tract. Our goal is to provide the best nutrition for your dog, but also to give choices to our customers.
Please review the rest of the ingredients below along with the guaranteed analysis. We think you will agree that Orion’s Choice Performance Formula provides the best nutrition for your working dog at a very attractive price.

Proper Dog Food Storage
Dog food should be stored in a cool, dry place. We strongly recommend that our product be stored in its original bag. Our bags are simple (you wouldn’t believe how much the fancy bags you see in the store cost!!) , but effective. Rather than having to charge you more for fancy bags, we spend the money on the quality of the food. To make certain that the food stays fresh you may wish to place the bag in a container such as a CLEAN trash pail as this will deter pests. We do not recommend dumping the dog food into the container. If this is done, the container will need to be scrubbed thoroughly after each batch. Otherwise, over time, fats from the dog food will accumulate on the sides and floor of the container and eventually turn rancid. This will then spoil the next batch of dog food. It is far easier to simply leave the food in the bag and then dispose of the bag once the contents are eaten.
